Cruz Azul and Club América played out to a 0-0 draw at the Estadio Azteca.
Santos Laguna’s win on Friday saw the Guerreros overtake both teams in the league table, but a win for Cruz Azul would have seen them become Liga MX leaders, while a draw is all Las Águilas needed.
Cruz Azul started on the front foot, and the first chance of the game came in the sixth minute when Elias Hernandez volleyed a shot just inches wide of Agustin Marchesin’s goal.
Club América briefly matched Cruz Azul’s intensity, and Renato Ibarra came close to opening the score ten minutes later when he forced a fingertip save from Jose de Jesus Corona.
However, Cruz Azul began to take complete control of the proceedings. In the 35th minute, an Elias Hernandez free kick found Martin Cauteruccio, who ballooned his headed effort into the crossbar. Moments later, Cruz Azul struck the woodwork a second time after a brilliant play from a throw-in finished with Roberto Alvarado smashing the ball into the post.
The second half failed to live up to expectations with both clubs cancelling each other out. The result means Club América go top of the league table, ahead of both Santos Laguna and Cruz Azul.
