Monterrey will resume the Liga MX season after the international break with the visit of the team directly above them in the table, Deportivo Toluca.
Toluca comes to town after beating Pachuca despite being down a man after losing to Atlas the previous week before that, also playing with 10 men. In fact, in seven of the 12 Liga MX matches that Toluca has actually been involved in this season has seen at least one red card. They’ve lost four games this season, all on the road, and are level on points with fourth-placed Pumas UNAM, but are in 5th place because of goal difference.
William da Silva will miss the match against Monterrey because of the red card suffered against Pachuca, but Rubens Sambueza will make a return after serving his suspension for a red card in the loss to Atlas.
As for Monterrey, Rogelio Funes Mori will miss out because his red card that he got against Cruz Azul last week. With Funes Mori out, the team will once again try to rely on Dorlan Pabón and Avilés Hurtado to drive the offense against a good Toluca team.
This Monterrey team just looks less confident and surprisingly toothless without Funes Mori in the lineup, so don’t be surprised to see Monterrey drop points in this match. However, Toluca has only once in their travels this season, losing to Atlas, Club Tijuana, Cruz Azul, and Puebla on the road, while only winning the away matches at Veracruz and Tigres.
Perhaps Toluca will be able to beat both Monterrey clubs on the road this season. Or perhaps los Rayados will be able to pull out a victory after getting some much-needed rest during the international break, as well as take the momentum from the win over Querétaro in the semi-finals of the Copa MX into this weekend’s game. Or, even more likely, both teams will drop points and get a draw, when they probably will both need a victory to keep pace in the race for a top four Liguilla place.
