Mission accomplished. Following Mexico’s 1-0 win over Panama on Friday, El Tri clinched a place in Russia 2018. Now, Mexico travel to San Jose, Costa Rica to take on los Ticos.

From a Mexican perspective, things have changed quite a bit since Friday’s win. There is almost a sense of calamity, something that has been alien to Mexico in their most recent World Cup qualifying campaigns. While pressure remains on coach Juan Carlos Osorio, there is no denying that “walking” into the World Cup, as Mexican media has put it, is an accomplishment worth recognizing. While this game might mean little in the overall picture for El Tri, beating Costa Rica and remaining first in the Hexagonal would be quite a statement, not just to the rest of CONCACAF but to Juan Carlos Osorio’s doubters.

For Costa Rica, their magic number remains two. A win over Mexico at home clinches Costa Rica a place in the next World Cup. Los Ticos arrive on the back of a shock 2-0 win over the United States and the atmosphere around the national team couldn’t be better. Moreover, consecutive wins over the so-called “giants” of CONCACAF is no easy feat. In that regard, a win over Mexico would not just mean their ticket to the World Cup, but also reignite the discussion of who is the best in the region.

Make no mistake, both teams will play this game to win. Giants or not, meetings between Mexico and Costa Rica are always special occasions and this one promises to be no different.
