Two northern Mexican giants clash this Friday as Xolos de Tijuana take on Santos Laguna at the Estadio Caliente.
The start of the season has not been kind to either team. After just four weeks, both Tijuana and Santos sit at the bottom half of the table, with Xolos positioned dead last with just one point. Eduardo Coudet’s men arrive on the back of a 1-1 draw with Puebla, in a game that brought some much-needed improvement from a Tijuana side that lost three of their first four games of the season. Santos, on the other hand, suffered their first defeat of the campaign at the hands of Veracruz, match that brought jeers from the Santos Laguna faithful.
This game involves two teams eager to earn their first three points of the season. On one hand, Tijuana hope their patience in Coudet is rewarded, while Jose Manuel “Chepo” de la Torre knows a win away from home would help alleviate some of the pressure his team is currently suffering from. Ironically, Tijuana have just one win over Santos Laguna in the Estadio Caliente since gaining promotion to Liga MX, which makes the Guerreros something of a bogey team for Xolos. De la Torre and his boys will look to capitalize on that advantage in what is rapidly turning into one of the most attractive fixtures in northern Mexico.
