Ascenso MX Recap: Jornada 2 Apertura 2017

A recap of all the weekend's action from Mexico's second tier of professional fútbol!

Mineros 1-3 Dorados

Mineros hosted Dorados in front of just over 4,000 fans in Zacatecas to open up Juornada 2 in Ascenso MX. Both teams came out of the gate with very aggressive attacking styles of play. However, it was los Dorados who were able to capitalize on their attacking style with a 14th minute goal by Edson Rivera. A mere 13 minutes later los Mineros would find the back of the net from the penalty spot to level the score. Not much else went right for los Mineros in this match. A mere 2 minutes after scoring a penalty to level the score Mineros found themselves behind. A senseless foul in the area gifted Dorados a penalty and the lead. Dorados would add one more goal in the 2nd half to finish off the contest.

Atlético de San Luis 2-0 FC Juárez

Atlético de San Luis played the first professional fútbol match at Estadio Alfonso Lastras in over a year against promotion favorites FC Juárez. The match couldn't have gone any better for the home side. in just the 7th minute Borja González put San Luis into the lead with a driven left-footed shot off of the game's first corner leaving the Juárez keeper rooted to the spot. From that moment onward San Luis was able to dictate the tempo and flow of the game. The home side's dominance lead to a 33rd minute penalty that was calmly slotted home by Pablo Olivera. The two first half goals were enough to ensure that the 15,000+ fans in attendance went home happy.

Correcaminos 1-2 Alebrijes

A 24th minute header whipped into the box caused all sorts of problems for the home side's defense. The ball which was originally hit towards the near post was headed on towards the far post where an almost completely unmarked Sergio Rodriguez was able to put Alebrijes in the lead. Almost immediately after scoring for the first time Alebrijes were able to add another. A cheap giveaway by Correcaminos enabled the visitors to launch a clinical counter attack that Luis Madrigal put away. In the 37th minute the home side were finally able to break through on the scoresheet, but they were unable to get another to take something from the match.

Cafetaleros 1-2 Cimarrones

Los Cafetaleros de Tapachula played host to Cimarrones in the 4th match of jornada 2 to kick off on Friday. zIt's safe to say that things didn't really go as planned for the home side. After 26 minutes the visitors took the lead through a goal scored by Luis Oropeza. Things went from bad to worse for los Cafetaleros as they had a player sent off in the 44th minute for an absolutely horrendous tackle. Gustavo Ramirez put the ensuing free-kick into the back of the net to give the visitors a 2-0 lead at the half. Shockingly los Cafetaleros actually played their best fútbol while they were a man down. A 59th minute goal by Adolfo Dominguez is testament to their improved play. Unfortunately for the hosts, their improved play wasn't enough as the fell 2-1.

Murciélagos 0-1 Venados

Perhaps the match between Murciélagos and Venados late friday evening was the most unusual out of all those played during Jornada 2. This is due to the fact that the match was played behind closed doors. The massive terraces of Estadio Centenario Los Mochis sat eerily empty as a professional fútbol match took place on the pitch below. The action on the pitch itself seemed to take a backseat to the empty terraces that sat empty for 90 minutes. Hardly anything of note happened on the pitch until los Venados scored a golazo from outside the area in the 82nd minute to win the match.

Potros UAEM 2-1 Leones Negros

Once again Leones Negros, one of the favorites to be promoted to Liga MX, underwhelmed with their performance on the pitch. At the beginning of the match and for most of the first 60 or so minutes of the match it appeared as though los Leones Negros had everything under control. They had managed to take a 1-0 lead into halftime and had weathered the storm for the first 15 minutes of the 2nd half, but then everything fell apart. In the 65th minute Potros UAEM equalized through a goal by Joel Huiqui. A mere 3 minutes after conceding the equalizer Leones Negros allowed another goal into the back of the net. This time a goal by Dante Osorio in the 68th minute put Potros UAEM up 2-1. Los Leoned Negros were never able to recover and ended up losing the match.

Club Atlético Zacatepec 3-0 Atlante

For much of the 1st half neither team was able to really get into much of a rhythm while they were in possession of the ball. The defenses seemed to easily stamp out everything that came their way. However, in the 41st minute Zacatepec was finally able to break the deadlock with a goal by Daniel Ríos. Then, early in the second half Atlante was reduced to 10 men after Alfonso Luna was shown a red card. After being reduced to 10 men, Atlante were unable to do much of anything offensively or defensively. 2 more second half goals by Zacatepec put the match out of reach.

Celaya 1-1 Jaiba Brava

Celaya split points for the second consecutive match as they drew 1-1 against the visiting Jaiba Brava. Just as they did last week against FC Juárez, Celaya dramatically came from behind to rescue a point. The opening goal of the match came from the penalty spot in the 21st minute as Daniel Ludueña put the visitors ahead. It looked as though the early goal was going to be enough to give the visitors a hard fought win, but Celaya earned a penalty in the 3rd minute of stoppage time. Ángel Eduardo Reyna ensured the match would end in a tie as he blasted home the penalty 2 minutes after the referee originally called it. As of date Celaya hasn't managed to score a goal outside of stoppage time at the end of the match.

Standings after jornada 2

Promotion eligible Dorados top the table after two consecutive victories. Fellow Promotion favorites FC Juárez and Leones Negros sit at 14th and 15th respectively.
