It is the sixth time in the last four years that these two teams meet in an official game, this time for a spot in the Gold Cup Final, as Mexico and Jamaica face off at the Rose Bowl. The last time these two teams met in a Gold Cup knockout phase it was the 2015 final, which Mexico ended up winning by the score of 3-1.
In fact, to find the last meeting between these two teams, you don’t have to go far, as they faced off a few days ago in the group stage. The final score for that match was 0-0, in the only game Mexico has finished scoreless so far in this Gold Cup.
Mexico have not been bad, but they haven’t been great either. Juan Carlos Osorio’s men finished the group stage above Jamaica, but were lucky to beat Honduras 1-0 in the quarterfinals. Jamaica, on the other hand, brushed aside Canada in the quarterfinals, and at times have looked impressive going forward.
The bad news for Jamaica is they have never been able to beat Mexico outside of home. Nonetheless, they will be boosted in knowing they beat hosts United States at this same stage of the tournament two years ago.
And so, with the United States waiting in Santa Clara, it will be either Jamaica or Mexico. For Mexico, a place in the final would be mission accomplished, but as they showed a week ago, Jamaica is no slouch and they have more than enough talent to cause another upset.
