We are down to the business end of the Gold Cup as Mexico take on Honduras for a spot in the final four.
El Tri arrive on the back of a 2-0 win over Curaçao that meant Juan Carlos Osorio’s men earned first place in Group C. It hasn't exactly been the best tournament for Mexico, but slowly and surely, El Tri are getting the job done.
The same can’t be said about Honduras. The Catrachos have had an underwhelming tournament, and if anything, they can thank French Guiana for qualifying as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams. Honduras finished the group stage without a single victory and a single goal to their name, but thanks to an issue in which French Guiana was forced to forfeit the match, Honduras earned three of their four points without breaking a sweat.
That said, the pressure is on Honduras coach Jorge Luis Pinto, much the same way the pressure is on Juan Carlos Osorio. For both coaches, a defeat in the quarterfinals could prove costly, especially for the latter. While El Tri are in this tournament with an alternative squad, the obligation for Mexico is to at least make the final. In that regard, there is little margin for error. It is all about getting the win and moving on to the next round.
