While all eyes will be in Sochi, Russia where Mexico will take on defending World Cup champions Germany on Thursday in the semifinals of the 2017 Confederations Cup, Mexico’s B-team gets ready to take the field in a warm-up game against Ghana.
One of the weird nuances in Mexican fútbol is that it presents you with these odd situations where El Tri will play two games in a span of two days. Of course, there is no physical way that the national team can play a friendly game against Ghana in one day and a semifinal game against Germany the next. and in that regard, Mexico’s B-team will be tasked with taking on the African side. In fact, this will be the first of two matches Mexico’s B-team will participate in ahead of what will be the 2017 Gold Cup, the other being Paraguay a few days later.
The problem for Mexico, though, is that the Ghanian national team will be no slouch, as they present themselves to this match with a rather strong squad . Despite historically dominating the head to head matchup between both teams, Mexico will find itself with a minor disadvantage, missing the bulk if their best players, including the likes of Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez, Hector Moreno, Andres Guardado, and more.
Make no mistake, this is is a strong Mexican side. The group is a domestic-based squad with players ranging among the best in Liga MX, and it will be interesting to see if they can manage to hold their own against an experienced African side.
