Club America and Santos Laguna close Week 15 action at the Estadio Corona on Sunday.

We are getting towards the business end of the 2017 Liga MX Clausura. A look at the league table and both Aguilas and Guerreros find themselves lingering in the final Liguilla positions. Currently, only Xolos de Tijuana and Monterrey have clinched places in the “Fiesta Grande”, but Club America can make it three with a win in Torreón.

Las Aguilas couldn’t arrive to this end of the season at a better time. Ricardo La Volpe’s men are riding a streak of five games without a defeat, including four wins. Defensively, despite a number of key injuries at the back, America have not conceded a single goal in their last four matches.

But Santos Laguna, too, are riding something of a positive streak. Jose Manuel “Chepo” de la Torre’s side have also gone five games without a defeat, but three of those have been draws. The Guerreros won’t exactly clinch a place in the Liguilla with a win here but they would overtake Las Aguilas in the league table.

Interestingly enough, both teams have already met twice this year in the Copa MX. The first match ended with a 3-2 Club America victory, and the second one ended 2-1 in favor of Santos.

In recent meetings, the Estadio Corona has tended to be a venue that favors those in blue and yellow. The last two league meetings between Club America and Santos Laguna in Torreón have ended in America victories. A victory here would take them to their 11th straight Liguilla.
