Michael Arroyo’s step-overs move Club America a step closer to Liguilla

After a terrific solo-run from Michael Arroyo, Oribe Peralta fired Club America to a 1-0 victory over Necaxa on Wednesday.

Club America’s injury curse has left coach Ricardo Antonio La Volpe frustrated in recent weeks, but one goal is all las Aguilas needed here, as they remain unbeaten this season at the Estadio Azteca and have conceded just twice in their last six league matches.

The breakthrough didn’t arrive until the 84th minute and was produced by an absolute gem from Michael Arroyo. The Ecuadorian international flew past several defenders in Ronaldinho-esque fashion before forcing goalkeeper Marcelo Barovero to a good save. The rebound, however, fell to Oribe Peralta, who needed just a simple tap-in to cash in for Arroyo’s hard work.

The victory moved Club America closer to sealing a place in the Liguilla and next will host Queretaro on Saturday.

In contrast, Necaxa’s gap adrift from relegation safety received an important hit, as their next game is against fellow relegation table rivals Veracruz.
