Halfway through the season, Club America tallies 10 points with the bulk of their points coming against teams in the bottom half of the standings. Though a 2-0 win over Cruz Azul ended a three-game goal drought, the team has not looked like the team which found its way into last season’s final. Against a last-place Leon squad on Saturday, America seeks just their fourth win of the season. Leon enters Saturday’s contest with the league’s worst record at 1-2-5, five points and a -7 goal differential.
In Las Aguilas’ last game, captain Oribe Peralta notched two goals to break a personal four-game scoring drought to bring his season total to three goals. Peralta’s current status as the leading scorer for las Aguilas says much of the current state of the team. While they have beaten teams facing relegation like Veracruz, Morelia and Cruz Azul, a team like Puebla gave America difficulties because of their personal bad finishing. Last season, America recorded 15 goals in eight games. This season, however, America has seven in the same amount of games.
Away from home, America has won just one game. Though its attack has slugged on this season, its defense has kept America within grasps of at least tying matches or coming away with a victory. Las Aguilas have conceded nine goals with six of them coming in the opening two matches of the season. After suffering a 2-1 and a 4-2 defeat to open the season, America has not allowed a team to score more than one goal on four different occasions.
The most challenging portion looms within America’s peripheral, thus making a win versus Leon ever more important. Adding to the pressure of winning away from the Azteca, America finds itself three points from contesting a spot in the playoffs. By winning against Leon and having just three more away games, America can set itself up for a strong finish and push for a playoff spot.
