After an even affair for the first match, Pumas will have the advantage as they host Tigres in the second leg of the CONCACAF Champions League Quarterfinal.
Tigres must overcome the altitude of Ciudad de México, the Pumas home fans, and having given up an away goal in order to progress - not an easy task for Tuca Ferretti’s men. André-Pierre Gignac has scored in two straight Liga MX matches, however he didn’t score during the previous match against Pumas and hadn’t scored in the first six Liga MX matches in 2017.
Pumas will need to break out of their current funk, having not won a match across all competitions during the entire month of February. The defense gave up eleven goals during their five February matches, and only one club (León) has conceded more in Liga MX play than their thirteen goals. Luckily for Pumas, Matías Britos has provided a bit of a spark, scoring the lone goal in the last CCL match as well as getting one against Querétaro last Saturday. He can’t do it alone though. Someone has to step up and up the goal production, be it Nicolás Castillo, Jesús Gallardo, Bryan Rabello, or someone else.
The winner of this match will face off against the winner of the New York Red Bulls - Vancouver Whitecaps match in Vancouver on Thursday. That series - like the Pumas-Tigres series - is heading into the second leg tied one goal each.
