Cecilio Dominguez ushered in his career with Club America by scoring the winning goal in a 1-0 victory versus Veracruz. Including Copa MX and Clausura 2017, America’s match versus Veracruz marked the first time this year las Aguilas came out unscathed. Now, a week later, las Aguilas travel to Michoacan to take on Monarcas Morelia.
After losing their first two games, America’s game against Veracruz started a three-game stretch in which las Aguilas matches up against bottom dwelling teams. With Veracruz No.17, Morelia No. 18 and Chiapas No. 16 on the relegation table, las Aguilas have a chance to undo their slow start.
Morelia has gone 1-2-1 in their league matches. Monarcas’ lone win came against Tijuana in a 2-1 showing. Still, Morelia look like the lead candidate to receive the boot from Liga MX.
America, who has a goal differential of -2, saw a way to respond to their opponents on offense through Dominguez. Though he has only played two official games, Dominguez kept a steady attack until scoring the winning goal on a diving header near the 60-minute mark. The attack from las Aguilas includes proven goal scorers in Oribe Peralta, Silvio Romero, and a struggling Darwin Quintero. Now with Dominguez on the roster, America may find a way to increase its team’s offensive dynamic.
Coming off a 3-1 loss to Atlas, Monarcas have the desperateness needed to make it a team for America to approach with seriousness. America has yet to win a game away from home so a win over Morelia allows las Aguilas to climb out of 15th in the standings and give the team a much needed boost in confidence.
