Tijuana (4W 1D 2L) returns home after a draw against Pumas that felt like a loss and a Copa MX win against Correcaminos UAT that felt like a loss (or at best, a really boring draw). They’re hoping to get back on track against a Monterrey (3W 4D 0L) team that hasn’t lost all season.
Tijuana needs to put the dispiriting draw to Pumas behind them, as there were positives that Miguel Herrera’s men could take away from the match. Xolos scored three goals against a good Pumas defense, getting goals from Avilés Hurtado, Victor Malcorra, and Guido Rodríguez - a total team effort. Xolos scoring by committee is a double-edged sword however, as there’s no real go-to scorer on the team. That hasn’t stopped them from scoring a league-leading 16 goals, which is five more than the next closest team - which just so happens to be their opponent this week.
While not scoring quite as proficiently as Xolos, Monterrey’s offensive prowess should not be underestimated. Colombian striker Dorlan Pabón has already notched five goals, and both Jesús Molina and Rogelio Funes Mori have two each, and five different players scored on Tuesday in the 5-0 win in the Copa MX match against Dorados Sinaloa. A big difference between these teams however is Monterrey’s defense is very good, having given up only seven goals in their seven games. Hugo González has had three shutouts in Liga MX play this season, and hasn’t conceded a goal in 218 minutes
