Correcaminos UAT vs. Tijuana: Highlights and box score

Henry Martín saves the day for Xolos

Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente press release

It wasn’t pretty, but the points in the standings count the same. Xolos were able to overcome a very slow start to pick up a 1-0 win against Correcaminos UAT in Tamaulipas. Henry Martín was the hero with a late goal.

Correcaminos starte the match perhaps the stronger side, keeping Tijuana on their back foot to begin with. In the 13th minute, Xolos did get a good chance on goal when Juan Martín Lucero’s cross had Correcaminos’ goalkeeper David Rambo beaten, but the intended recipient Henry Martín missed the tap-in. Correcaminos striker Nicolás Saucedo had two very good chances in relatively short succession, however Luis Michel was able to save one while the second sailed high of the goal. As the first half wore on, Xolos was able to play more disciplined and commit less turnovers.

In the second half, play was still mostly buildup with very few chances. Ricardo Chávez had a great look at goal in the 81st minute but his shot was well wide and high. Shortly after, Xolos would finally seize an opportunity when Avilés Hurtado drove the ball down field. He was met by a Correcaminos defender, and the ball squirted out to Victor Malcorra on the left. His shot was pushed out by Rambo, however it went to Henry Martín. Martín knocked the ball into the wide open net to put Xolos up late.

Correcaminos was unable to respond, and Xolos were able to hold on to grab all three points.

The three points were critical, as they are now tied with Correcaminos in the Copa MX Group 1 standings, with the only match left being Xolos match next Tuesday against Cimarrones de Sonora at Estadio Caliente. A win or a draw puts Xolos through, while a loss would require a tiebreaker to decide who moves on from the three team field.
