Tijuana heads to Tamaulipas tonight to take on Correcaminos UAT in the penultimate match of the opening round of the Clausura 2017 Copa MX. It’s likely to be an emotional match, as the last match these teams played in was marred by a serious injury to Xolos’ defender Yasser Corona. Corona is rehabilitating at home, however his future as a professional soccer player is uncertain at this time.

This is Xolos second game in three days, coming off of a wild draw against Pumas in Mexico City on Sunday that saw Tijuana squander a 3-0 lead late in the match. Coach Miguel Herrera said after the match “I am disappointed, very disappointed. We can’t give away a game in 15 minutes. You can’t let a team come back and tie it when you are winning a game 3-0. It’s not bad to gain a point (at Pumas) but earning a point doesn’t taste well. The team works well for 70 minutes and then they forget to play.”

Correcaminos have lost their last three matches in the Ascenso MX and currently sit 16th out of eighteen in the table. They lost 3-0 to TM Jaiba Brava this past Saturday, however they did win their last Copa MX match against Cimarrones de Sonora on a lone goal by Néstor Olguín. Olguín has two goals in the Copa MX tournament, and Gael Acosta and Diego Olsina are tied for three regular season goals for UAT.

Currently in the Copa MX, Correcaminos leads Group 1 with six points. A win tonight would clinch a berth in the knockout round, while a Tijuana win would put them level with Correcaminos. If Xolos win tonight, next Tuesday’s match against Cimarrones will decide everything, as the top seven second place teams will also advance to the knockout round.
