The two best teams across the regular season face off in the 2017 Liga MX Apertura Final when Tigres host rivals Monterrey on Thursday.
Never in the history of Mexican fútbol had there been a Clasico Regiomontano in a Liga MX Final. As such, this series will be historic and is even more special considering it unites arguably the two best squads in all of Mexico.
For Monterrey, this Liguilla so far has been more or less a walk in the park. Antonio Mohamed’s men have had no problem outscoring opponents and have failed to succumb to the pressures of being superlider. Not only are Monterrey winning, they are doing it in style.
Tigres, on the other hand, have not been as flashy, but they have found ways to progress. The universitarios struggled to get past León in the quarterfinals, but thumped Club America in the semifinals to reach their third straight Liga MX Final.
On paper, there is no doubt Monterrey remain the favorites to win it all, but Tigres fans can take solace in knowing they have been unbeatable at home this season. In fact, Tigres failed to lose a game all season at the Estadio Universitario and conceded just three times in eight home games.
Whatever happens, it is unlikely this series will be decided in the first leg. Both these teams are set up to win titles and will likely approach the first leg with precaution. That said, there is no reason not to expect a game without goals, as these two teams were the highest goal-scoring teams during the regular season. This sets up what should be a spectacle in and outside the field.
