After a scoreless draw in the first leg, Aguilas and Cementeros will fight it out to determine who will be the final team to qualify to the Semifinals of the 2017 Liga MX Apertura.

The result of the first game could best be defined as a win for Las Aguilas. Miguel Herrera’s men went down to ten men early in the match and then went down to nine in the second half when Edson Alvarez was sent off for a second yellow.

Despite Cruz Azul’s control of the ball, La Maquina were simply not good enough to get past America’s defensive resolve. As it stands, though, Cruz Azul know that a goal in the second leg would be enough to force America to a win, although another scoreless draw would be of benefit to the hosts.

Of course, history plays a huge part when it comes to Clasicos. Perhaps Cruz Azul’s biggest challenge is getting over that psychological hump of knowing their last Liguilla visit to the Estadio Azteca ended in the most heartbreaking defeat in the club’s history. In fact, Cruz Azul don’t fare well when it comes to Liguilla matches against Club America, and in that regard, las Aguilas’ history carries plenty of weight.

Whatever happens, no doubt, this will be an exciting match. Tactically, it is rich in potential, with Paco Jemez and Miguel Herrera commanding their respective teams. It doesn’t get any bigger than what will be experienced at the Estadio Azteca, and whoever wins will carry plenty of momentum into the Semifinals.
