Mexico will look to close out the CONCACAF Hexagonal in style when they visit an anxious Honduras side at the Estadio Metropolitano in San Pedro Sula.
Juan Carlos Osorio’s checklist is just about complete. After Costa Rica’s draw with Honduras on Saturday, Mexico clinched first place of the Hexagonal, and the only thing left now for El Tri is to finish the Hex undefeated.
Honduras, however, won’t be a piece of cake. The Catrachos are needing of a win to have any chance of obtaining a direct ticket to the World Cup, and this match is very much a do or die situation for Jorge Luis Pinto’s men. As of now, Honduras are sitting in fifth place of the Hex and need to win and for the United States or Panama to drop points to at least clinch a place in the playoff.
Mexico and Honduras have already faced off once in San Pedro Sula in this cycle of World Cup qualifiers. In that game, Jesus Manuel “Tecatito” Corona and Jurgen Damm scored to earn Mexico a shock victory over the Catrachos, their first in that stadium in 50 years.
Mexico will have two key absences for this match, as Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez is out due to personal reasons and Hirving “Chucky” Lozano picked up an elbow injury in training.
