Behind goals from Javier Eduardo “La Chofis” Lopez and Alan Pulido, Chivas started their 2017 Liga MX Clausura with a 2-1 win over Pumas UNAM on Saturday.

22-year-old Chofis was a surprise inclusion in Matias Almeyda’s starting XI and justified his selection by scoring the breakthrough on 27 minutes.

As Pumas pressed for the equalizing goal, Chivas doubled their lead when Alan Pulido, after a superb cross from Angel Zaldivar, put the ball past Alejandro “Pikolin” Palacios.

Pumas manager Francisco Palencia responded at half-time by pushing his men forward, and he was rewarded when Alan Mendoza produced a brilliant effort from outside the box to pull the visitors within one.

Pumas then sought to find a leveler and came close when Javier Cortes struck the woodwork from direct free-kick.

As luck would have it, Pumas would again strike the post through Pablo Barrera minutes later.

At the end of the match, though, Chivas held on to earn their first three points of the Clausura.

With the result, Pumas UNAM amount a total of 35 straight years without a win at Chivas.
