Osorio names Mexico roster for Iceland friendly

Soccer: Mexican National Team vs Senegal Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Edson Alvarez, Hugo Gonzalez, and Luis Reyes are among the new faces in Mexico’s 23-man squad for their upcoming friendly against Iceland. The squad features 22 players from the domestic Mexican league with LA Galaxy forward Giovani dos Santos also making the list.

Playing the sweeper role, 19-year-old Edson Alvarez has been a revelation at Club America, while helping las Aguilas reach last season’s Liga MX final.

Meanwhile, Hugo Gonzalez, who saw himself left out of America’s plans this winter, has immediately impressed at Monterrey.

Reyes, 25, generally a left back, is also set to make his first appearance after leading Atlas in assists last season.

Included in Juan Carlos Osorio’s national team are regulars Rafael Marquez, Hirving Lozano, Alfredo Talavera, Jesus Dueñas, and Jose de Jesus Corona. Promising Monterrey defender Cesar Montes, though, once again sees himself left out of El Tri’s plans.

Mexico is seeking to open 2017 with a win against Iceland in Las Vegas, Nevada, which will be played on Wednesday February 8.
