Copa MX Round of 16 Day 2: Preview

Club America leads the day as they look to join Cruz Azul and Chivas in the Quarterfinals

A day after Cruz Azul and Chivas went through to the Quarterfinals, Club America leads the day in Wednesday’s action. America was the top team in the Group Stage and will face Veracruz, who qualified at 16th with a last minute goal in Torreon. Toluca and Leon also face off in the most balanced fixture, while two Ascenso MX teams face off for a chance at playing Chivas.

Queretaro vs BUAP

Queretaro faces an Ascenso team, Lobos BUAP, at home as it looks to put their league struggles behind. While they did well in the group stages, they have struggled overall and lost against Pachuca but should be the favorite against BUAP.

The winner of this game faces Cruz Azul.

Toluca vs Leon

Toluca and Leon will play a rematch of their Sunday game right down to the venue. Toluca has been one of the better teams last week as they got 7 out of 9 points. Leon has also improved under their new coach Javier Torrente. It looks to be the best match of the day.

The winner of this game faces Puebla.

FC Juarez vs Oaxaca

FC Juarez, the surprise team from Ascenso this Copa MX, is at home against Oaxaca. Juarez was the best Ascenso team but will face a Oaxaca team that has a good history in this competition (they lost a Copa MX final to Tigres in 2014). It will be a good game but Juarez should be favored.

The winner of this game faces Chivas.

America vs Veracruz

America, the top team in the group stage, will face Veracruz at home. Ricardo Lavolpe makes his debut in the Copa MX against Juan Antonio Luna, who makes his debut as interim coach. Veracruz is the defending champion but face a huge uphill battle against an America team that has received a huge boost after beating Pumas.

The winner of this game faces Chiapas.
