Copa MX Round of 16 Day 1: Preview

Cruz Azul vs Zacatecas and Morelia vs Chivas are the big games on Day 1

The Round of 16 of the Copa MX is on this week as the tournament switches to the one-game elimination format. Two of the big teams are in action on day 1, with Cruz set to face Zacatecas at home and Chivas having to play a difficult away match at Morelia.

Puebla vs UDG

The Round of 16 gets underway with Puebla facing UDG at the Estadio Cuauhtemoc. Puebla had a great group stage, where they won three out of four in a weak group. They also have great momentum from back-to-back victories against their relegation rivals (Veracruz, Morelia). UDG, on the other hand, is an Ascenso MX team and didn't stand out much in the group stage, although they were exciting (highlight being their 4-4 draw with Puebla).

Chiapas vs Atlante

Chiapas is at home for their match against Ascenso team Atlante. Both teams are struggling with their league format and neither of them shined much in the group stage. Chiapas should be favored because of having the better team and being at home.

Cruz Azul vs Zacatecas

Cruz Azul is the heavy favorite as they play at home against Zacatecas. They are the better team, have home advantage, and have some of their confidence back after getting a point against Tigres in Monterrey. Still, it might be a tricky game, especially with the memory of the Necaxa defeat from last season’s Copa MX that started the team’s negative spiral.

Morelia vs Chivas

The most exciting game on paper is Morelia vs Chivas. Morelia will be at home against Chivas, but they play this game after a heartbreaking defeat to a ten-man Puebla team over the weekend. Chivas look to be the better side, but they struggled in the group stage, while Morelia finished first in their group.
