Highlights: Chivas dominate Club America in Clásico Nacional

From the moment las Chivas de Guadalajara knocked in the first goal near the 19-minute mark, las Aguilas del America couldn’t generate a clear shot at goal in its most important game of the regular season. A visiting Guadalajara controlled all 90 minutes of the match in a 3-0 win Saturday night at the Estadio Azteca.

Defensively, Chivas embargoed its area, and when a Club America player could make the jump, someone quickly pressured and extinguished America’s offense. The lack of ferocity from America’s attack culminated in the loss with Iaasac Brizuela and Javier “La Chofis” Lopez prowling the field and connecting twice, both in the first half.

The second goal, which arrived at the 31-minute mark, cushioned a 1-0 lead for Chivas and landed from the right side off a counter-attack and was triggered by a pass from Lopez to Brizuela.

Chivas had many more opportunities to increase the 2-0 lead, but Moises Muñoz and Paolo Goltz prevented the deficit from going any further until heading to the final minutes of the game. At minute 85, Guadalajara once again jumped on a counter and crossed the ball for Carlos “Gullit” Peña, who headed home the final goal of the game.

For the entirety of the second half, America failed to make a significant play and when faced with a corner or free kick, Chivas blocked misguided shots and crosses, took command and continued its dominant showing.

The 3-0 loss extended Club America’s winless streak in Liga MX to three games. America must now seek to end the streak against another historic rival, Cruz Azul, September 10 at Estadio Azul. Meanwhile, Chivas will host Chiapas at the Estadio Chivas.
