Bayer Leverkusen opened their 2016/2017 campaign with a 2-0 win over SC Hauenstein in the first round of the DFB-Pokal on Sunday. Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez helped out with a goal, and assisted Karim Bellarabi in Bayer Leverkusen’s second.
The Mexico international starred, poking a looping shot over the opposing goalkeeper in brilliant fashion to give Bayer Leverkusen the lead in the 39th minute, following a sloppy start to the match.
In the second half, Chicharito picked out Karim Bellarabi inside the box, and Bellarabi didn’t think about it twice before firing a one-time shot for the Werkself’s second.
Then in the 81st minute, Andjelo Srzentic pulled SC Hauenstein within one with a header after a free-kick, but it was too little too late as Bayer Leverkusen held on to progress to the next round of the DFB-Pokal.
Bayer Leverkusen will now kick off their German Bundesliga campaign next Saturday when they take on Monchengladbach.
