The August FIFA Rankings are out and not much movement has taken place. The first 19 spots remained the same as the last rankings. Mexico has kept its 14th ranked spot and remains the highest ranked CONCACAF nation. Costa Rica moved up 6 spots to 21st and the US dropped 1 to 26th. Mexico has aspirations of being a seeded team at the 2018 World Cup but it is slowly running out of time to make a move in the rankings. A deep run at next summer’s Confederations Cup is a must if they want to have any shot at being in the seeded pot for Russia. Luckily for Mexico, their Olympic showing will not factor into their ranking.

Mexico’s 2 opponents for their October friendlies are ranked 93rd (New Zealand) and 82nd (Guatemala). Guatemala’s position improved 8 spots in the latest rankings but will not improve the perception of the competition they will give Mexico.

Is 14th too high for Mexico or just about right?
