Malaga goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa may finally find himself in a better position to get more league starts. According to several reports coming out of Spain, Ochoa is one step away from joining Granada CF.
After struggling mightily at the beginning of his Malaga career, "Memo" finally got ten La Liga starts to his name at the end of last season. More importantly, he made the most of his starts. Per WhoScored.com, Ochoa finished as the fifth highest rated keeper in the league.
Unfortunately for him, those late season chances only came due to an injury to starting goalkeeper Carlos Kameni. Well, Carlos is now healthy and looking to reclaim his starting role. In the past two seasons, Kameni would start the league games and Memo would be relegated to Copa del Rey matches. This arrangement was not ideal for the Mexican as he started missing out on national team call ups due to a lack of form.
If reports are to be believed, Granada will sign Ochoa on a free transfer. Malaga are in need of the "foreign player" slot Memo currently occupies. In La Liga, players with non-EU passports are limited, and having a backup keeper use one is not ideal. Memo needs to start games if he wants Juan Carlos Osorio to think of him as Mexico's #1. This deal would be a win-win on all fronts. Until it is officially announced, I will still be on board the #FreeMemo movement.
Happy Memo might break free of the bench? Let us know in the comments.
