Raul Jimenez moved from Club America to Diego "Cholo" Simeone's squad two years ago for a reported fee of around $13 million. His first and only season in Atletico Madrid ended with only four league starts and one goal in 28 total appearances. Sensing a log jam at forward, Atletico shipped him off to Benfica on a complex deal that allegedly had both clubs sharing his wages. Benfica initially purchased 50% of his rights last Summer and now own 100% of his rights. Raul's move to Benfica only came about after he "overslept" and missed his medical at West Ham.
Now, Benfica have purchased Raul's full rights after other European clubs became interested in the Mexican striker. Most interested was Marseille, who had finished 13th in Ligue 1 last season. The club manager said they were offered Jimenez but were not able to move quickly enough before Benfica closed on their most expensive signing ever.
Raul Jimenez will now be the most expensive Mexican player, surpassing the 20 million Euros that were paid for Nery Castillo. Raul's fee is rumored to be around 22-24 million Euros. Jimenez is coming off a 12 goal season and will be relied upon even more now that Nicolas Gaitan was sold to...Atletico Madrid.
Per official statements from Benfica, the club paid 9.836 mil Euros for 50% of his rights from Atletico Madrid last Summer. To buy his remaining 50%, Benfica paid 12mil Euros this Summer.
Is Raul worth all that money? Let us know in the comments.
