It's by far the most engaging tie of the opening round of fixtures in Liga MX. Some might even call it a Clasico when Chivas pay a visit to Pumas UNAM at the Estadio Olimpico Universitario on Sunday.
Fresh off their SuperCopa MX victory over Veracruz, part of what makes Chivas one of the teams to watch this season is because of their manager, Matias Almeyda. The Argentine has given the Rebaño Sagrado an adventurous football identity, and beating Pumas in their own stadium would be a significant statement to start their season.
But Pumas coach Juan Francisco Palencia will be thinking much a long the same lines. The former Pumas legend took over Guillermo Vazquez during the offseason, and for Palencia, Almeyda's brief accomplishments with Chivas underscore everything he wants to do at Pumas.
Of course, finding an initial balance will be difficult for Palencia, and Chivas present Pumas with a tough challenge to start their campaign. Similarities in style, however, could well make this one of the most entertaining matches of Week 1.
