Orbelin Pineda scored in the first half and Omar Bravo added a second late on as Chivas clinched a place in the qualifying round of the Copa Libertadores with a 2-0 win over Veracruz in the 2016 edition of the SuperCopa MX.
The first half had seemed set to end goalles despite plenty of Chivas pressure, but Pineda forced his way into the box and fired a shot past Pedro Gallese to give Chivas the lead.
Veracruz soon started to click, though, and as they came forward, Julio Furch came within inches of equalizing the score from an effort inside the six-yard box.
Matias Almeyda's side fashioned their chances at scoring from a breakaway, and Pineda came close to grabbing a second with a shot from distance.
With Veracruz, as expected, holding on to the majority of the possession, second half substitute Juan Perez twice emerged as the Tiburones Rojos player with the biggest chance to equalize.
But Chivas returned to the front foot and finally got their reward as the clock ticked down. Eduardo "La Chofis" Lopez picked out Omar Bravo inside the box, and the iconic Chivas forward needed a simple tap-in to send Chivas on their way to the Copa Libertadores.
