Club America win Clasico Nacional and eliminate Chivas from Liguilla

Club America came from behind to beat rivals Chivas 2-1 at the Estadio Azteca and progressed to the semifinals of the Liga MX Liguilla.

Jair Pereira's early header threatened to give Chivas a flying start but his effort slammed into the crossbar.

It didn't take long, though, for Chivas to open the scoring when Orbelin Pineda pounced past Hugo Gonzalez from long range to give Chivas the lead.

Las Aguilas enjoyed some pressure thereafter, and  their efforts paid dividends just before the half-hour mark when Jesus "Chapo" Sanchez conceded a penalty. Osvaldo Martinez stepped up and rifled his spot kick into the back of the net to level things at 1-1.

A hectic period followed, and just moments later, Hugo Gonzalez tripped Pineda inside the box for the second penalty of the night.

But Carlos Alberto "Gullit" Peña stepped up and smashed his spot kick into the crossbar to miss the opportunity to give Chivas a bigger advantage.

Chivas would go on to rue their missed chance, and soon after the break, some Chivas sloppiness allowed Las Aguilas to break. Darwin Quintero burst through the left wing and laid a chance for Oribe Peralta, who slid the ball home to give his side the lead.

Chivas mounted men forward in search for the all-important equalizer, but they constantly gave the ball away and failed to build anything in attack. The closest incident for Chivas came when an effort from Jair Pereira was flicked by substitute Michel Vazquez to force Hugo Gonzalez to an easy save.

The final whistle brought cheers from the Club America faithful as Las Aguilas took home the 222th edition of the Clasico Nacional.
