It's Clasico Nacional weekend in Liga MX, which means there is no doubt what the most intriguing match of the weekend will be. Week 10, however, will begin on Friday, and while many will be waiting for the big game on Sunday, there is still plenty of other Liga MX action to talk about.
In one of the opening games of the weekend, Santos Laguna will play host to Pachuca at the Estadio Corona. After an up-and-down start to the season, many are still waiting for Santos Laguna to display some consistency. So far they've showed some brilliant performances to start the season, but a shoddy run of four games without a win had the team briefly out of a playoff position.
Of course, on a good day, Luis Zubeldia's side is capable of a great performance. When everything goes well at the back, their attacking threat is significantly boosted. Zubeldia has plenty of attacking alternatives to choose from, and that could prove helpful going forward for the Guerreros.
But Pachuca, who sit second in the league table, know a thing or two about attacking prowess. Hirving Lozano and Franco Jara make them a dangerous side, and with them on the team, Pachuca's firepower is significantly increased.
Meanwhile, the biggest game on Saturday will be a repeat of last season's final between Tigres and Pumas UNAM. The latter can forget about their Copa Libertadores woes, losing to Deportivo Tachira on Wednesday, as they take on the team that beat them on penalties last season.
Right through the squad, the Universitarios aren't talking about revenge, but you can be sure the game will be on the back of their minds. What could help their chances is that the starters should be well rested, with Guillermo Vazquez opting to play the reserves in the midweek loss. Just three points separate the two sides in the league table, and a win would be a big statement from Pumas.
Tigres, on the other hand, arrive to this game after losing in the Clasico Regio last week. Ricardo Ferretti's side has bounced back from defeat surprisingly well twice already this season, and if their impressive attack clicks, it could be another gloomy night for Pumas.
Finally, the most important game of the weekend is the Clasico Nacional between Club America and Chivas. It doesn't get any bigger than this as both sides will meet at the Estadio Chivas on Sunday.
There is no doubt that Chivas' 2-0 win at Queretaro last Saturday will have changed the narrative of this game quite a bit. Prior to the game against Gallos Blancos, Chivas was winless in their last 11 league games. Matias Almeyda's side don't come in any higher spirits, though, after crashing out of the Copa MX during the midweek.
Still, this is one of the Rebaño Sagrado's biggest chances of giving their fans some sort of success in the league, and while all games against Club America are must-wins, the team will also be conscious that a win would be an important step to take if they plan on making a second-half season push for the playoffs.
Of course, this game is also huge for Las Aguilas. They will take confidence from their 4-1 win over Monarcas Morelia last week, where Club America looked absolutely rampant in Cuauhtémoc Blanco's farewell match. The team is winless in their last three clasicos, however, and there is no better way to finish with that trend than in Chivas' own stadium.
