Atletico Nacional came through a penalty shootout to earn bronze over Club America in their third-place match for the Club World Cup.
A stalemate did not look in the prospect after the South American champions jumped to an early 2-0 lead. Miguel Samudio scored an own goal before Orlando Berrio teed up Alejandro Guerra for Atletico Nacional’s second.
But in the 36th minute, Michael Arroyo capitalized on a Miguel Samudio pass to pull the Mexicans within one.
In the second half, America coach Ricardo La Volpe brought on Oribe Peralta to try and force a leveler, and after a penalty was called for a tackle on Jose “Chepe” Guerrero, “Hermoso” stepped up to convert.
Following a goalless last 25 minutes, a penalty shootout was to decide this match.
Osvaldo Martinez was the first to slip-up when his effort crashed against the crossbar. Juan Pablo Nieto also missed for Atletico Nacional, but Miguel Samudio was the next sky his penalty for Las Aguilas.
Carlos Darwin Quintero, Daniel Bocanegro, Oribe Peralta, Macnelly Torres, and Michael Arroyo all converted for their respective teams. At the end, Miguel Borja rolled in the decisive spot-kick to hand Atletico Nacional third-place.
