Silvio Romero earned Club America a point six minutes from time as Las Aguilas fought back for a 1-1 draw against Atlas at the Estadio Jalisco on Saturday night.
After 42 minutes, America trailed Atlas when Èdson Rivera nailed a header to the right of the goal on a cross from Jose Madueña.
Before Romero scored the equalizing goal, Oribe Peralta nearly matched Rivera’s goal at the 57-minute mark, but his shot went too far left. William Da Silva followed a couple minutes later on a shot from outside the box, but the ball sailed wide.
Romero’s goal finally arrived by targeting a pass from Renato Ibarra down the middle of the goalpost. Romero’s goal preserved America’s undefeated streak with Ricardo La Volpe at the coaching helm and guaranteed America a spot in the Liguilla.
Heading towards their next game, America can climb just one more spot in the standings, if Chivas lose their next game and they pull off a win or draw. For Atlas, the draw ends their hopes of extending their season.
America plays their last regular season game against Pachuca on the road next Saturday at Estadio Hidalgo.
