Cesar Montes scored a second half equalizer as Monterrey earned a 1-1 draw with Tigres at the Estadio Universitario in another edition of the Clasico Regiomontano.
There had been plenty of drama early with Yimmi Chara striking the left post with a shot from outside the box, but Tigres took the lead at the stroke of halftime when the Monterrey defense failed to notice the lurking Ismael Sosa as he headed home a Javier Aquino cross.
In the second half, Antonio “Turco” Mohamed brought on Arturo “Poncho” Gonzalez, but despite the offensive change, it was Tigres who charged down in search of a second.
As the match approached the final 20 minutes, a corner ball rolled across for Cesar Montes, whose strike was deflected past Nahuel Guzman to level things at 1-1.
Monterrey almost snatched a late winner when at the death Ivan Piris steered an effort towards Nahuel Guzman’s goal, but at the final whistle, both teams shared the spoils in another entertaining Clasico Regio.
The draw leaves Monterrey with feint chances of making the Liguilla, and next they will host Veracruz at the Estadio BBVA Bancomer. Meanwhile, Tigres, who are third in the league table, take on league leaders Xolos de Tijuana.
