Domestically, las Aguilas del America have only one trophy to go after. After a home 4-3 penalty shootout defeat to bitter rival Chivas in the Copa MX semifinals, the glamour behind the club’s centennial season has faded. Now with just the league trophy up for grabs, las Aguilas face Santos Laguna Saturday night at the Estadio Azteca.
Though they are playing at the Azteca, Club America have sporadically felt a significant advantage at home this season. Since joining the club as head coach, though, Ricardo La Volpe has led las Aguilas to two straight home wins in his short tenure.
Santos come into the match just two spots away from last place. Over a course of five games, Santos have three defeats and two draws. With a goal differential of -12, Santos’ defense ranks among the worst in the league.
Although las Aguilas have accumulated enough points to land in the fifth spot of the standings, just three points differentiates a trip to the playoffs or another blow to their fairly unsuccessful centenary year.
Though inconsistency and lack of wins at home have hurt Club America, forward Michael Arroyo has begun to find his stride as he has scored in two consecutive games for his club. America’s highly touted forward, Silvio Romero, however, has scored just once in a five game span.
Still, reeling from the loss to Chivas, America’s season still has enough games left for the team to jump ahead in the standings and try to salvage what’s left of their anniversary.
