It’s by far the most engaging tie in recent Copa MX history. Club America will host rivals Chivas at the Estadio Azteca for a spot in the Copa MX final.

No other cup match has brought out more eager anticipation than this one. Two months after both teams met in the league, the Estadio Azteca will once again be witness to biggest game in Mexican fútbol.

For las Aguilas, the wounds are still fresh from their 3-0 thumping back in August. From an America point of view, that performance was humiliating and was the catalyst that led to a change in manager, with Ricardo Antonio La Volpe taking Ignacio Ambriz’s place on the azulcrema bench.

But the change of manager doesn’t seem to have punctured America’s season in any way. By contrast, it seems to have strengthened the team. Under La Volpe, the team has not lost a single game and has seen notable improvement on the field.

Needless to say, this is obviously the most complicated game in La Volpe’s short reign. Part of that is because of everything a Clásico Nacional means, but also because Chivas have looked exceptional at times.

Right through Jorge Vergara and the fans, Chivas are talking about how they must not waste a historic opportunity to spoil the party a second time in America’s centenary season. And to have the chance to play a final over your rivals? That is something that will be remembered for years to come. That should underscore everything about this game.
