Club America and Tigres advance to Liga MX semifinals

Leon won 2-1 against Club America in the second leg of their Liga MX quarterfinals clash but couldn't recover from defeat at the Estadio Azteca, going out 5-3 on aggregate.

Hernan Dario Burbano had put La Fiera in front in the 44th minute but they struggled to create many clear-cut chances as Dario Benedetto added to America's advantage 12 minutes from time.

Juan Antonio Pizzi's side piled on the pressure knowing three goals would put them through against all odds but could only get a late consolation goal through Elias Hernandez.

With the result, Las Aguilas have now reached the semifinals in six of their last eight Liga MX tournaments.

Meanwhile, a lone goal by Andre-Pierre Gignac saw Tigres overcome Chipas at the Estadio Victor Manuel Reyna to progress to the semifinals of the Liga MX playoffs.

The first leg ended with a 2-1 win in favor of Ricardo Ferretti's side and Tigres' advantage grew when Gignac's strike in the 21st minute saw Tigres take a two-goal aggregate lead.

Gignac netted his second goal in as many games when Rafael Sobis rolled the ball across to the France international, who sent it into the back of the net with a superb first-time effort.
