Limited by CONCACAF rules and by the Gold Cup 2011 schedule, today Jose Manuel "Chepo" de la Torre released the list of the 26 men that will represent Mexico in what is indeed the biggest International competition of the Americas, the Copa America.
As stated earlier, limitations placed by CONCACAF and with the Gold Cup in mind, Mexico's manager had to pick players that are part of the Under-22 category plus 5 members outside of that circle.
This preliminary roster feature some of the surprising exclusions from the Gold Cup roster, including the likes of Carlos Vela and Jonathan dos Santos. Overall, the squad heading to Argentina will be very young, but will have the added experience of four players that represented El Tri in the World Cup.
Also in the 26-man squad are Under-20 youngsters Diego Reyes from Club America and Erick "Cubo" Torres from Chivas, who both had fantastic seasons with their respective clubs and are well deserved of the call-up. On the other hand, the "plus five" veteran members of the squad are: Luis Ernesto Michel, Rafael Marquez, Paul Aguilar, Oribe Peralta and Jonny Magallon.
The list's most represented club is Chivas de Guadalajara with six players, followed by Atlas with three, and Cruz Azul, Monarcas Morelia, Club America and Pumas UNAM with 2 each.
Out of this 26-man roster only 22 will make the trip to Argentina. The final list of 22 must be handed in by June 27th and the competition begins on July 1st.
