Lanus winger and Italian football legend Mauro Camoranesi has been linked to a Cruz Azul move for quite some time, mostly due to his history with the club, but there's now almost no chance that it will be going down. Cruz Azul ended speculation about the transfer about as clearly as a team can do so, simply stating that Mauro Camoranesi will not be coming to Cruz Azul. No "don't believe the hype", no "we refuse to confirm or deny", none of that noise clubs usually go through. It's just over.
And frankly, why shouldn't it be? Camoranesi is a great player, but he's one who is getting up there in age. With Omar Bravo, Emmanuel Villa, Christian Gimenez, Israel Castro and Gerardo Torrado in their first choice front six, the last thing that Cruz Azul needed to add was another aging player. Javier Aquino, a youngster on the fringes of the El Tri selection, has been in fantastic form for La Maquina.
Cruz Azul can now move forward and focus on other potential acquisitions. With Copa Libertadores looming, they're in need of a couple.
