Liguilla Final Draws Big Ratings On Telemundo

This may not sound like news, but the second leg of the Liguilla final between UANL Tigres and Santos Laguna drew the highest ratings of any Mexican football match on American television in the year 2011. The match drew 2.3 million viewers in the states.

Yes, this is the final, but the Super Clasico is almost a bigger deal than a final that doesn't include either Club America or Chivas. Additionally, the Super Clasico is on Univision, which is more widely available across the United States than Telemundo. This is a bit surprising, especially considering the fact that Tigres got a win in Torreon, making them extremely heavy favorites going into the second leg.

This rating compares very favorably with English Premier League broadcasts on FOX Soccer Channel, UEFA Champions League broadcasts on FSC and FOX Deportes, Copa Libertadores broadcasts and MLS broadcasts. The Champions League final, El Clasico in Spain and the Premier League broadcasts on FOX broadcast TV pull similar ratings, but don't quite reach that mark of 2.3 million viewers in some cases.
