Copa America 2011, Mexico Vs. Uruguay: Lineups And Live Match Thread

Photo

It's been a serious struggle so far for Mexico in the 2011 Copa America, and they have one last chance to turn their campaign into a success. If El Tri Sub-22 are able to pull off a win against Uruguay tonight, they'll advance to the quarterfinals, where they will probably play Colombia. Edinson Cavani is out for Uruguay, as he sustained a knee injury in the last match. Here are the lineups.

Mexico lineup: Luis Michel, Paul Aguilar, Hiram Mier, Hector Reynoso, Nestor Araujo, Darvin Chavez, Diego Reyes, Jorge Enriquez, Javier Aquino, Giovani dos Santos, Rafael Marquez Lugo

Uruguay lineup: Fernando Muslera, Maxi Pereira, Diego Lugano, Sebastian Coates, Alvaro Pereira, Alvaro Gonzalez, Diego Perez, Egidio Arevalo Rios, Cristian Rodriguez, Diego Forlan, Luis Suarez

The game starts at 8:45 pm ET and can be seen on Univision and Youtube. In Mexico, the game can be seen on Fox Sports Latin America. Uruguay only needs a draw to advance, so Mexico need to bring their best.

1-0 Uruguay

Alvaro Pereira. Michel mishandles the ball.

lol no kidding

Man, other than Gio this team really is garbage

Ugh

They can’t seem to string more than two passes at a time.

HT

1-0 Uruguay. Mexico are hopeless.

Well, still hoping anyways

For an upset. Another couple of shots from Gio where the keeper for Uruguay misses would be good:). But more likely the corner kicks will provide the upset

I call bullshit...

maybe Mexico should pop their collars too… then the refs would give some love…

At least it's over

We don’t have to watch Mexico struggle anymore. That was very painful, I hope this pushes FMF to demand CONCACAF for no restrictions next time. Also, hope all the seleccionados remember to be more discreet next time.

Wonder who will win the Copa America, I don’t know that any team has really impressed.

Nope

Been a weird tournament. Suddenly Argentina, who were crap in the first two games, are favorites again

no dog in the fight anymore...

except that I still dislike Suarez. Glad he didn’t score tonight… the crazy cannibal handball player…

Argentina or Bazil, why not

It would’ve been nice to see a miracle. Mexico experimented and didn’t have enough of the A-members for the win. They already used up a lot of club capital on the Copa America so they were probably picking one tournament to take seriously and the results show it.

Can’t send an age-restricted olympic team to the PRO’s and expect good odds, but still… disappointing.

After Gold Cup, Copa America Results reflect cumulative skills

In defense of Michel, Giovani, Pacheco, and company, this is still a team sport and the teams that the FMF agreed to send per CONCACAF restrictions was a team of novices with so little experience you could probably find the same left of national team experience in 3 Uruguayan players.
Michel saved a LOT of goals, and the Uruguay missed he had to change directions, he did stop the goal at first, and the closest players any rebound were Uruguayan.
Gio the first couple of games showed some great runs.
Pacheco had a skillful display considering his own experience and being used as a sub and sparingly at that.
Along with Paul Aguilar and a few other okay players, this young team with no European based players was a skeleton crew.
I am still optimistic how some of these same novices supporting the high-profile players will do with more time having taken this experience with them and further development, and also let’s not forget the scandalized players who will not exactly be banned for life from soccer or their clubs.
In between 2005 and 2011 youth championships there has been some talent that deserves some playing time… not 100% certain that many of them were on the field for this Uruguay game though, maybe a few diamonds that are hard to identify in such an inexperienced team.
